Many people are taught the four basic steps of prayer in the LDS faith.  They go like this:

  1. Address Heavenly Father.
  2. Thank Him.
  3. Ask.
  4. Close in the name of Jesus Christ.

There are an additional three missing elements that are the secret sauce if you want to be more powerful in communicating with God.

It is important to ask God for blessings, blessings for others, and other needs.  It is also important to ask questions when appropriate.  The next step is to listen.

To make the prayer more meaningful and powerful, you need to listen for answers to your questions.

The next missing step actually comes after the prayer is closed.  You need to act on the answers you receive.  This is part of the “real intent” that Moroni mentions in the Book of Mormon.  If you want more and better answers, you need to act on the answers you already have.  This would include living the commandments and doing the things you already know you should be doing.  This requirement to act is magnified when you receive a specific answer to your prayers.

The final step is to share the gospel.  Perhaps you can talk about your answers to prayers and the miracles you have experienced, or perhaps they are too sacred to share.  You’ll know what to do, I’m sure.

So, the a more complete list would look like this:

  1. Address Heavenly Father.
  2. Thank Him.
  3. Ask.
  4. Listen.
  5. Close in the name of Jesus Christ.
  6. Act on the answers you have received.
  7. Spread the Good Word.

Follow these steps, and you will get better answers.
