“I’ve hired you to help me start a war. It’s an prestigious line of work, with a long and glorious tradition.”  — Vizzini

“I know, the people are quite taken with her. It’s odd, but when I hired Vizzini to have her murdered on our engagement day, I thought that was clever. But it’s going to be so much more moving when I strangle her on our wedding night. Once Guilder is blamed, the nation will truly be outraged – they’ll demand we go to war.”  — Prince Humperdink

“The first casualty of war is truth.”  — unknown

I was thinking about this concept where people lie and do bad things for the sole purpose of causing a war because of an article in the news about Iranian actions.  The article claims to be an anonymous interview arranged by a very credible source who is also unnamed.  Here is the most inflammatory languange from the article:

He said he had been a highly regarded member of the force, and had so “impressed my superiors” that, at 18, “I was given the ‘honor’ to temporarily marry young girls before they were sentenced to death.”

In the Islamic Republic it is illegal to execute a young woman, regardless of her crime, if she is a virgin, he explained. Therefore a “wedding” ceremony is conducted the night before the execution: The young girl is forced to have sexual intercourse with a prison guard – essentially raped by her “husband.”

“I regret that, even though the marriages were legal,” he said.

Why the regret, if the marriages were “legal?”

“Because,” he went on, “I could tell that the girls were more afraid of their ‘wedding’ night than of the execution that awaited them in the morning. And they would always fight back, so we would have to put sleeping pills in their food. By morning the girls would have an empty expression; it seemed like they were ready or wanted to die.

“I remember hearing them cry and scream after [the rape] was over,” he said. “I will never forget how this one girl clawed at her own face and neck with her finger nails afterwards. She had deep scratches all over her.”

The article is here.  There are a lot of people who want to go to war with Iran.  If this is true it is awful and the people responsible for this practice will be held accountable for their acts.

There is no question that Iran has an oppressive government that preys on the people.  This is also true of Russia, Saudia Arabia, Syria, Egypt, and many other countries where we are trying to play nice.

Here are two links to pages that discuss lies that led us to want to go to war.  The first is from British media and details made up allegations from the Boer War forward.  The second is from a site that targets the Bush family in particular and the early 1990’s Gulf War.  It is interesting reading.

I hope the Jerusalem Post article is not accurate but the alternative that people are trying to create a war fervor is pretty bad too.
